FT ONLINE:
Saving Water
In 2001, TASROP received a commendation from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Colorado Department of Public Health for switching to powder coatings. But the company still had to deal with the high costs and environmental impact associated with maintaining and operating product pretreatment systems and disposing of wastewater. Robert Miller, the company’s owner, was determined to find a solution. The resulting equipment, which he called the Save the Water (STW) recycling system, reduced his water usage from 16,000 gallons of water per month to 1200 gallons per month, and from three barrels of chemicals per month to one and a half barrels per
year — a 90% savings on water and chemicals. Since then, the system has been successfully implemented in other finishing operations... MORE |

Ask Joe Powder
“We recently began powder coating operations here at our facility. What is the proper way to dispose of the spent powder that we can no longer use? A couple of our powder vendors have told us to bake the powder until it forms a solid and then throw it away with our normal everyday refuse. How would we go about baking it if that is a viable option? I know the material is non-hazardous; however if we threw the material away without solidifying it, wouldn’t the material create an inhalation hazard?”
