Kanile’a ‘Ukelele, located in Kaneohe, HI, uses only the highest grade, well-seasoned woods to produce its musical instruments. Each ‘ukulele is scaled to have a perfect intonation and is meticulously assembled by master builder Joseph Souza, who runs the company with his wife, Kristen. When the company began in 1998, the Souza’s primarily used a nitrocellulose lacquer (commonly known as “nitro”) on its instruments. The logistics of categorizing, inventorying and identifying instruments while they cured in different stages over a three-week period was a constant challenge. As the instruments were curing, the nitro would release harmful fumes throughout the shop. “I knew there had to be a better way,” Joe says...WANT TO KNOW MORE?

Ford, Henkel Pioneer Enviro Friendly Pretreatment Process
Ford Motor Co., along with Henkel Corp., has produced the automotive industry's first production vehicle with a non-phosphate Bonderite® conversion coating process. “This new pretreatment technology from Henkel helps Ford lead the industry in innovation while reducing operating costs and minimizing the environmental impact of our manufacturing processes,” said Michael Vandelinder, chief engineer, Ford Motor Co. Paint Engineering.

Eastman Chemical Opens Paint Spray Facility
Eastman Chemical Co. has opened a new state-of-the-art paint spray facility at the company’s international headquarters in Kingsport, TN. The new facility allows reproducible application of coatings using current industrial techniques under controlled environmental conditions. In so doing, it facilitates the development and testing of innovative coating additives that help improve the performance of automotive OEM, refinish and other coatings in a variety of industrial settings and environments.

LORD Corp., manufacturer of MetalJacket® coatings, has added a new MetalJacket custom coater in China. The coater, Wuxi Zhongjie Vibration Isolators Co., Ltd., reportedly will help LORD Corp.’s customers meet the growing demand for LORD MetalJacket coatings for both automotive and industrial applications. The Zhongjie application line installed a traditional hoist transfer process and will apply the LORD MetalJacket 1100-2110 system.

Barach Named Sales Manager for Heatbath
