FT ONLINE:
2K Technology
Most organic coatings used today involve a chemical reaction to cure or set the finish. Some require elevated temperatures or ultraviolet (UV) radiation to accelerate the curing and therefore manage the finishing process time. Plural component technology, in some cases referred to as 2K (from the German 2-komponent), employs an alternate technique. Two or more very reactive components are mixed shortly before or as the coating is applied. The components are so reactive that the mixture usually does not need additional energy (heat) to achieve complete cure. Compared to conventional solventborne coatings, the advantages of this technique are numerous and include low energy costs, shorter process time, the availability of high-quality chemistries and lower VOC content…MORE

Ask Joe Powder

“What are some possible causes for bubbling of powder over e-coat? I am a custom coater who occasionally powder coats an e-coated carbon steel (hot-rolled pickled and oiled) part for a particular customer. The powder is a urethane polyester and coats fine over non-e-coated, pretreated substrates. Millage is fine on the e-coat and on direct applications. The powder vendor is leaning toward the e-coat as a possible problem, but the e-coat supplier is not saying anything. Can you help?”

BASF Coatings Launches Innovative Coatings Technology
BASF Coatings has developed “Integrated Process II”, a novel, highly efficient coatings technology for automotive OEM applications. For the new process, the specially formulated basecoats combine all the functions of the primer, such as stone chip protection and ultraviolet resistance. For the automotive industry, this means that the coating process is shortened thanks to the elimination of the primer application section of the paint line and the primer oven. Reduced investment and operating costs, material and energy savings, improved productivity, and eco-efficiency are other advantages of the new BASF Coatings system technology. The new system has been operating without a hitch, and was successfully integrated into the MINI production line at the BMW Group Oxford, UK plant…MORE

Hardide Secures Orders from Expro Group
Hardide Coatings, a provider of unique ultra-hard surface engineering technology, has secured orders from the Expro Group as its first new customer for its US$5 million coatings facility in Houston, TX. The order is the result of more than 18 months of close cooperation between the companies to engineer and test a solution to increase the wear resistance of downhole tractor tool grippers. Hardide has made several prototypes for Expro that have been run in harsh environments, proving to extend the life time of components... MORE
