Plasmatreat Jet
The Promise of Plasma
A typical automotive paint shop confronts significant environmental challenges. Chemical solvents and adhesion promoters, water and material waste, air emissions, high energy consumption - for an industry facing increasing public and legislative pressure to "green" its operations, the list is daunting. It's no surprise that the auto industry is seeking to replace some of its existing processes with more environmentally benign operations. But in today's tough economic climate, "environmentally friendly" technologies have to do more than just benefit the environment; they also must have a positive impact on a company's bottom line. At Ford Motor Co.'s Research and Innovation Center (RIC) in Dearborn, MI, researchers have been testing a new pretreatment technology, known as atmospheric plasma, that promises to achieve both goals...

UP FOR DISCUSSION:
The U.S.-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement

A bill currently before Congress would eliminate tariffs on most products moving between Colombia and the U.S. According to the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), the agreement would help U.S. manufacturers compete more effectively in the fast-growing Colombian market. "Currently, U.S. manufactured goods entering Colombia face an average tariff of 14%. At the same time, over 92%of Colombian goods face no such barriers in the United States.  Approving the Colombia Free Trade Agreement would lower these tariffs to zero in most cases immediately, effectively leveling the playing field for manufacturers," NAM said in a statement. However, the agreement faces opposition from House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other key democrats, including presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, due to Colombia's failure to protect labor activists, quell violence and shut down paramilitary groups.

What do you think? Should Congress fast-track approval of this agreement? Submit your comments
