A Uniform Cure
Many different features and designs influence curing uniformity, including the thermal insulation, accuracy of the temperature controller and thermocouple, thermocouple placement, location of exhaust outlets and fresh air inlets, through-metal heat transfer, and chamber pressure. Although each parameter affects the ability of the equipment to achieve a given temperature tolerance, factors such as the air volume, distribution of the air through the work chamber, and shell losses play a key role in keeping the heat uniform within the work chamber, ensuring that each area within the oven receives the same air temperature regardless of its location....

American Axle Strike Affects Plating Firm
Elm Plating in Jackson, MI, has had to lay off its third shift - 13 workers - as a result of the ongoing UAW strike at five American Axle plants in Michigan and New York that began on February 26 over a labor agreement. Elm Plating finishes and heat treats bolts and fasteners that are found in many vehicles. The company operates two plants and employs 118 workers.

Ian Sellars Leaves Behind a Lasting Legacy
Ian C. SellarsIan Sellars, the owner and managing director of Elcometer and one of the founders of the modern coatings inspection industry, passed away on April 10. For nearly 50 years, Sellars steered the family business from a small 370 ft2 office employing seven people, into a global manufacturer and supplier of inspection equipment for the coatings and concrete industries employing more than 200 staff in six offices and a global network of over 150 distributors.

Thickness Gauge is IMO PSPC-Compliant
Elcometer 456 IIIThe International Maritime Organization (IMO) salt water ballast tank coatings regulation titled Performance Standard for Protective Coatings (PSPC) will be effective beginning July 1, 2008, for all ships in excess of 500 gross register tonnage (GRT).
