Chrome-Free
Aircraft Finishing
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations for hexavalent chrome air emissions have become increasingly stringent over the last few years. But are there any suitable replacements to engineered hard chrome (EHC) for aircraft finishing? Absolutely. In fact, growth in the use of EHC alternatives such as high-velocity oxygen-fuel (HVOF) has accelerated as original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and their customers have recognized that alternatives can provide better wear and corrosion performance with faster turnaround in maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO)....

Ask Joe Powder

"About a year ago I powder coated some large aluminum gear housings for geared windlasses on a sailboat. The castings had become corroded, with several bare aluminum spots where the original coating was gone. For preparation, the castings were sandblasted to white and outgassed for two hours at 450°F. After cooling, the castings were acid etched and DI (deionized water) rinsed for any oxidation that may have occurred with the heating. They were then preheated and epoxy primered while hot so that the powder gelled on contact. After partial curing, they were then topcoated with polyester powder and fully cured. The total DFT (dry film thickness) was 5 mils or more. Now, after a little more than a year back in service (on salt water) some blisters are developing. If I were to start over is there anything that could be done to prevent coating failure?"

ErgoDeck WHITE-Increases Comfort for BIW Workers
Go here to enter the drawing!Wearwell ® has expanded the ErgoDeck family with the recent launch of ErgoDeck WHITE. These ergonomic floor tiles are designed for "body in white" applications where metal forms are painted and inspected. ErgoDeck WHITE reflects light rather than absorbing it. Because light bounces off the tiles, it highlights blemishes in paint. ErgoDeck WHITE is a silicone-free, SOFT, 68 durometer compound ideal for large and custom-sized areas. The super-sized, 18" x 18" tiles quickly assemble and securely connect to create "a floor above a floor" and increase worker comfort and productivity. Researchers Develop Solar-Powered Paint
Researchers at Swansea UniversityResearchers at Swansea University in Wales, led by Dr. Dave Worsley in the Materials Research Centre at the University's School of Engineering, are investigating ways of painting solar cells onto the flexible steel surfaces commonly used for cladding buildings. Unlike conventional solar cells, the materials being developed at Swansea are more efficient at capturing low light radiation. The researchers' aim is to produce cells that can be painted onto a flexible steel surface at a rate of 30-40 sq m/min.
