"We used to use a polyester baking enamel for metal office furniture components. This coating had good resistance to 20 rubs with lacquer thinner and MEK [methyl ethyl ketone]. We find that the powder coat we are using doesn’t have similar chemical resistance, and I suspect that most common powders would fall short of baking enamel in this area. What types of powders would give similar chemical performance to the baking enamel, and why aren’t they more commonly used?"

BASF Offers ATEX Assistance to European Finishers
Since January 1, 2006, every European operator of lines containing explosion-hazard areas has been required by law to draft an explosion protection document under ATEX ("atmosphère explosible"), the collective term for European explosion protection regulations. However, many paint shops lack the knowledge to draft the required forms. To address this problem, BASF Coatings has developed a safety concept based on the current European standards that provides all users of paints assistance in assessing the explosion hazard.

NEAT Developers Garner Ciba R&D Award
Ciba’s R&D Award 2007 recently was presented to the international team responsible for developing Novel Encapsulated Additives Technology (NEAT), an innovative technology that allows high-performance light stabilizers to be readily incorporated into waterborne coatings. Based in Basel and Amagasaki, Japan, the award-winning team includes Frank Pirrung and Carsten Schellenberg (project leads), as well as Delphine Kimpel, Wolfgang Peter and Junichi Tanabe, all of the Ciba’s Coating Effects Segment.
