"Designing for the Future" — that’s how Aerolite Extrusion Co. defines its aluminum extrusion business. Realizing that it’s impossible to design for the future with outdated production equipment, Aerolite has always tried to remain on the cutting edge of technology in its manufacturing and finishing plants. When its coating operation, Youngstown, Ohio-based EPCO Finishing, was asked to be the first to install a new electric reciprocator from ITW Ransburg (a 21' TurboDisk), the company carefully researched the technology and then readily agreed. "We had to replace a 40-year-old hydraulic system, and we wanted to get away from the hydraulic oil, seal replacement and other maintenance issues, while keeping better control on our coating operations. This new system promised to do all that for us."

Rohm and Haas has updated the roof of its nine-story global headquarters with an advanced polymer elastomeric roof coating that reflects a broad spectrum of UV, visible and infrared light and emits nearly 90% of any absorbed heat, all of which contribute to the degradation of traditional roofing materials. It also protects against expansion and contraction cracks in the roof, which lead to roof deterioration and leaks, because it is elastic and can bridge cracks that form as temperatures fluctuate. The result is a cooler and longer-lasting roof, lower air temperatures and energy savings for the entire building.

PPG White Paper Compares Liquid and Powder Coatings
PPG Industries' industrial coatings business has published a new white paper comparing the environmental, economical and performance advantages associated with the application of liquid and powder coatings on architectural aluminum. The eight-page technical document is intended to give architects, building owners, specifiers and curtainwall consultants an unbiased view of the expanding design and technology choices for architectural aluminum coatings.

Convenience Products, maker of Seal-Krete^® brand products, has introduced a new resin-rich, self-cross-linking epoxy bonding primer called Lock-Down™ specifically for concrete surfaces. According to the company, using the primer before painting will increase topcoat adhesion by 50% and significantly reduce the potential for cracking, peeling and chipping.

Wood Sealer Increases Water Repellency
SCS-100 Wood Deck Sealer, a new wood sealing product from SEI Chemical, promises a higher degree of water repellency, faster surface dry times and long-term performance at price points comparable to generic house paint. The product features a new water preventative technology using a nanoparticulate that does not allow moisture to hold a wet edge. This technology reportedly allows the coating to dry up to three times faster than beading silicone based treatments, which extends the coating’s life span.
