Speed is critical in any industry. In finishing operations, line speed dictates process efficiency, and the amount of time required for curing largely dictates line speed. The faster the curing process, the greater the throughput and the higher the profits. A new technology based on near-infrared (NIR) thermal processing is improving the field of surface treatment by substantially reducing curing time. The technology involves high energy sources that radiate near the infrared spectrum (more than 90% of the energy emitted is below 2 µm). icotec ag in Altstätten has received the 2007Materialica Design Award in the “surfaces” category in Munich, Germany, for the functional coating of composite implants made of carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK. This marks the third time in a row the Swiss company has received this international innovation and design award for one of its products.

New Powder Coating Protects Marine Vessel Hulls
Xiom Corp., Long Island, NY, has developed a new high-performance, environmentally safe, self-cleaning, marine vessel hull protective coating. The new “stay-clean,” patent-pending powder coating (used on the right two panels in the photo) for both steel and fiberglass boat bottoms is designed to
reduce maintenance costs and fuel consumption caused by marine growth. The easy-to-apply polymer/ceramic-based coating contains no tributyl tin (TBT) or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and it does not ablate or wear away.

Silver Once Again Tops Automotive Color Charts
Silver has remained at the top of the charts as the most popular color for 2007 cars, but other colors are gaining on the perennial leader. According to the annual automotive color popularity data released by PPG Industries, silver is losing some steam as black closes in on the long-time favorite. In addition, brighter hues such as blue, red and niche market colors seem primed for resurgence.
