Waterborne Protection
Two-component (2K) urethane and epoxy coatings have long been the standard for protecting steel and concrete structures. However, both of these systems have drawbacks. 2K urethanes pose handling issues, such as limited pot life and worker exposure to isocyanates, while epoxies are restricted to primer applications and also can contain hazardous ingredients, such as aromatic amines. Most urethanes and epoxies also contain higher than acceptable volatile organic compound (VOC) levels. Scientists at Rohm and Haas Co. have developed a new waterborne industrial coating technology that can replace these 2K coating products without compromising performance. Dubbed Avanse Technology Platform, the new technology not only meets the physical and durability requirements of rigorous steel and concrete applications, but also offers VOC compliance in demanding regions such as California and Western Europe….

Enthone Invests in New Plating Laboratory
Enthone Inc., a business of Cookson Electronics, is building an advance plating applications laboratory. The lab, which is scheduled to be completely operational in September, will house multiple high-performance plating lines that will enable processing of Enthone functional, decorative and electronic coatings that are designed to deliver corrosion protection, wear resistance and superior aesthetics on a variety of parts.

BASF Establishes New Distributor Network
BASF Corp. has implemented a new distributor network to support customers of its Performance Chemicals for Coatings, Plastics and Specialties business in the U.S. According to Thierry Chevrier, director of Performance Chemicals-Pigments and Additives for BASF in North America, The new network was necessary to consolidate the services previously provided by BASF and the former Engelhard business.

In this new position, Kreeger will lead the segment’s international business expansion efforts.

Michelman Develops Non-Skid Coating

Michelman’s newest non-skid coating for paper, SofTak® 326, is designed to perform at an angle of skid of up to 45 degrees. When used on slip/tier sheets, the product reportedly will reduce or eliminate product slippage and shifting of palletized loads during transportation.
