Better Waterborne
In 2000, Black Brothers, a state-of-the-art equipment manufacturer, switched from solvent-based to waterborne coatings, primarily for workplace health and safety. Unfortunately, the initial waterborne coating used was deficient in both appearance quality and production efficiency. It was prone to runs and sags, which required excessive painting time to avoid or correct. Equally if not more important was a highly inconsistent dry time, which might vary by as much as six hours. A several-hour delay in assembling a finished machine or in putting on all of the required decals and labels placed product delivery schedules at great risk. In 2005, the company turned to a different waterborne coating that offered both a high-quality finish and drying time consistency…MORE

Ask Joe Powder

“Our facility is in Houston. I understand that “fish eyes” are usually caused by oil, grease, and other contaminants that are incompatible with the coating, but it appears that humidity also can cause these crater-like defects to occur. We store our powder at temperatures below 74ºF. In discussions with some powder suppliers about product shelf life and storage, there seems to be a general consensus that if a powder sprays, it is okay even if it is beyond the 12-month “shelf life.” Since powder is hygroscopic and it is not stored in airtight, sealed boxes, is the humidity likely to contribute to coating issues, particularly in older, stored coatings?”

New UV Primer Speeds Touch-Up
BASF’s new VP-126 Power-Fill ultraviolet (UV) primer, which was originally developed for use in automotive refinishing, is now being used for fixing isolated defects in the automotive OEM coating process. With this new primer, an auto body with a tiny mar can be touched up precisely at the site of the flaw rather than having to go back through the entire coating process, resulting in time and cost savings.
